Semana Santa in Sevilla
Under
the
full
moon
of
the
vernal
equinox,
during
Semana
Santa
(Holy
Week),
the
Spanish
city
of
Seville
is
transformed
into
a
moving
tableau
of
religious
scenes
venerating
the
Passion
and
resurrection
of
Christ
as
well
as
his
Sorrowful
Mother’s
grief.
Their
life-size
images
are
carried
throughout
the
city’s
narrow
cobblestoned
streets
on
pasos
(platforms)
resembling
massive
ornate
floats
made
of
intricately
carved
and
decorated
wood,
covered
in
gold
or
silver.
Their
Baroque
style
combined
with
the
ornamentation
of
hundreds
of
flowers
and
dozens
of
candles
create
a
resplendently illuminated scene as they float over a sea of humanity.
